Why table salt need to add in shampoo?

The most of people knew that table salt used as food additive. If you read the label on your shampoo bottle, table salt is listed in ingredients.
What is table salt?
Table salt is white cubic crystals with a characteristic salty odor. Chemical formula is NaCI. Chemical name is sodium chloride. The table salt has the effect thickening the mixture. In shampoo need to add some amount of table salt because of increasing the viscosity to specification range in the finished product.

Classification of Surfactants

Surfactants are classified by their ionic properties in water as like anionic, cationic, nonionic and amphoteric.

  1. Anionic is negative charge based on sulfate and carboxylate anions for example; Ammonium lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Soaps.
  2. Sodium Laureth Sulfate ( CH3(CH3)CH2OSO3Na) is clear yellow liquid. It is foaming agent detergent and surfactant.
  3. Cationic is positively charged emulsifiers such as : Benzalkonium chloride, Cocamidopropyl betaine and cetylpyridinium chloride.
  4. Nonionic is no charge such as Fatty Alcohols,
    Alkyl poly(ethylene oxide), Cocamide MEA.
  5. Amphoterics is capable of both positive and negative charge or no charge. Amphoteric surfactants, such as sodium laurimino-dipropionate.

What is surfactant?

The technical foundation of cosmetic science is surfactants. In daily life, we are using products known as surfactant to remove grease and dirt from a surface. The most common surfactants are detergents, soap and shampoos. By reducing surface tension , surfactant are able to make oil and water mix. Surface tension of a liquid is a result of internal attractive forces. It is what causes the surface portion of liquid to be attracted to another surface. such as that of another portion of liquid. The compounds of surfactans are both hydrophilic-water loving and lipophilic- oil loving. The oil soluble portion is usually a hydrocarbon such as sodium stearate and lauryl glucoside. The water soluble portion is generally salt groups such as ammonnium lauryl sulfate. (1)
